Introduction to turning characteristics and turning technology

Turning is done on a lathe, using the rotary motion of the workpiece and the linear or curved motion of the tool to change the shape and size of the blank and process it to meet the requirements of the drawing. Turning is a method of cutting a workpiece on a lathe using a workpiece relative to the tool rotation. The cutting energy for turning machining is mainly provided by the workpiece rather than the tool. Turning is a common cutting method that occupies a position in production. Turning is suitable for machining rotary surfaces. Most workpieces with rotary surfaces can be machined by turning, such as inner and outer cylindrical surfaces, inner and outer conical surfaces, end faces, grooves, threads and rotary forming surfaces. The tools used are mainly turning tools.

Among all kinds of metal cutting machine tools, lathes are widely used, accounting for about 50% of the total number of machine tools. The lathe can be used to turn the workpiece with a turning tool, as well as drilling, reaming, tapping and knurling with drills, reamers, taps and knurling knives. According to the characteristics of the process, layout and structural characteristics, lathes can be divided into horizontal lathes, floor lathes, vertical lathes, turret lathes and profiling lathes, most of which are horizontal lathes.

Turning process characteristics

(1) High processing accuracy and easy to maintain the accuracy of the position between the processing surfaces. This is because the turning process continues continuously, the nominal cross-sectional area of the cutting layer is constant, the cutting force changes little, and the cutting process is stable, so the machining accuracy is high. In addition, the outer circular surface, the inner circular surface, the step surface and the end surface can be processed by a single clamping on a lathe. The accuracy of the machine tool can ensure the positional accuracy between the surfaces.

(2) High productivity and wide application range. In addition to turning the intermittent surface, in general, the turning tool and the workpiece are always in contact during the machining process, and there is basically no impact phenomenon. The cutting speed and the large backing knife are the most suitable for the feed point, so the productivity is high. . Moreover, the turning process can adapt to a variety of materials, a variety of watches, a variety of sizes and a variety of precision, and a wide range of applications.

(3) The tool is simple and the production cost is low.
