On October 21st, it was reported that Sheikh Niamane, the Secretary-General of the Senegal Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mining, stated on Tuesday that the government plans to make decisions in the energy sector based on reliable data and rigorous analysis.
While speaking at the National Renewable Energy Investigation and Verification Seminar, Nyane emphasized that this move aims to build an "efficient and resilient" energy industry, and pointed out that "reliable data and rigorous analysis" must serve as the "pillar of wise decisions". He happily stated: "With a clear vision, we have now become one of the leading countries in Africa. By 2024, the installed capacity will reach 1,903.8 megawatts, with renewable energy accounting for 29.1%." According to him, this investigation is the country's first of its kind, and it provides a detailed overview of the overall situation of the renewable energy industry through both the perspectives of enterprises and households.
The director of the National Renewable Energy Agency (ANER), Diuma Cobol, however, warned that the proportion of green energy used by enterprises is relatively low, accounting for only 6.7%, while the proportion of fossil energy is as high as 93.3%. He also noted that rural areas use renewable energy more frequently than urban areas.
For the director of the National Statistics and Population Bureau, Abdou Diouf, the survey results will help to better understand the electricity usage of households, the installed capacity, and the obstacles faced in the promotion of solar energy technology. He said: "These data will not only guide this year's work, but also provide a basis for the strategic planning of the industry."
Kathleen Fang, the representative of the United Nations Development Programme, expressed her appreciation for this initiative, believing that it holds "decisive" significance in mobilizing climate funds and private funds. She emphasized that access to clean, reliable and reasonably priced energy is a core issue for the economic and social future development of Senegal.
