The Happy Online reported on July 23 that Ghana's Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announced when submitting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review Report to Ghana's Parliament that the government is developing a 1,200-megawatt state-owned combined-cycle gas-fired power plant in the city of Abrem in south-central Ghana to increase power generation and reduce electricity costs. He stated that preliminary studies have confirmed the project's feasibility and that preparatory work has already begun. Environmental, engineering, and permitting processes are progressing steadily. The first phase of the project, with a capacity of 600 megawatts, is expected to become operational in 2028, and the government has directly procured gas turbines from General Electric Vernova to reduce the total project cost. Dr. Forson said that the power plant is part of the government's broader initiative to strengthen the national energy infrastructure and ensure a more reliable and affordable electricity supply, which will help lower power generation costs, reduce electricity prices, and create job opportunities.
